Now that I have your attention, a new movie is about to hit the big screen.  You may already have seen the trailer.  The movie 2012 opens in theaters on Friday, November 13, 2009.

Check out the November 2009 issue of Sky & Telescope magazine.  There are several doomsday scenarios circulating about the end of the Earth.  E.C. Krupp examines all of them in "The Great 2012 Scare" including a conspiracy by NASA (who knew?).

This is followed by a good article by Robert Naeye entitled "Real Potential Disasters".  It covers impacts, super volcanoes, and tsunamis.

Plus, don't forget to check out the article "Jupiter Takes a Hit" by J. Kelly Beatty.  It appears that the planet took another impact on July 19th.

So be prepared when the anchor turns to you and asked if the end of civilization will occur in 2012.  Tell him what he really needs to worry about.

Full disclosure:  I have been a subscriber to Sky & Telescope for a long time and have read it intermittently for 44 years.  I just received my November issue and noticed the articles which may be of interest to station scientists.

A week before the movie 2012 is released NASA added a Q & A on their website to answer questions.  There are some very good links at the end of the story.  Here is a link to the NASA story:
